Restimulation of producing wells can provide enormous gains in well performance with modest investment compared to the cost of drilling and completing a new well. The challenge is selecting the best candidates for restimulation and designing a procedure that preserves existing production while improving sections that have been under-stimulated and gaining access to sections that might have been bypassed entirely. Selection of good candidates is often made more complicated by the lack of detailed rock and reservoir properties in the horizontal wells. The OmniLog advantage is that the data required to determine those properties is available from the original drilling data and reports.
Drill2Frac uses the OmniLog lateral profile, combined with a PerfAct evaluation of the original completion design to create a fracture map which acts as a “predictive” production log. The workflow identifies primary targets – where little or no stimulation is present, and secondary targets – where partial stimulation has taken place but can be improved. The total length of the lateral that is represented by the primary and secondary targets is then used to provide an assessment of the restimulation potential. A list of potential candidates identified by other means such as production evaluation can be compared using the Restimulation Consulting service to select the best possible candidates.
As an added benefit, the determination of stimulated, under-stimulated, and unstimulated portions of the lateral provides critical information that can be used to design the re-stimulation and the pumping schedule, including diversion stages.
